I used to have the problem but no more.  The sidebar avator would login quickly; the main menu user avatar would never log in, just kept trying.  I'm not sure, but it might have happened when we moved to 4.9.1.x.

My laptop completes the sign in process but my desktop won't complete. Both on Win 10.
