Too much VRAM usage? Working as intended?

Hello!

v.4.4.1.2000  was the best version ever, too bad it's old and some sites don't work with it anymore. After fighting with black screen problem with v.4.9.4.2000 I upgraded to MX 5.0.2.1000, now I don't have black screens anymore.

But the VRAM usage is ridiculous, 1,7GB! and it can go even higher.

GPU-Z shows VRAM just fyi. ON the bottom gadget the blue color is system RAM(8GB) and yellow is page file(8GB).

As you can see nothing is stuck in the background eating up VRAM.

Having 130 tabs open and expecting Maxthon to use less memory is what's ridiculous. And from what I can tell it looks like your machine has only 2GBs of RAM??? No wonder your seeing black screens. And by the way it isn't VRAM, just RAM. I'd suggest buying more RAM or opening fewer tabs.

Agree. I'm actually surprised it's able to still run, especially with so many images.

Looks like 8GB to me. (5200mb used of 8Gb = 63% noted in task manager and the system monitor bottom right).

He's looking at the GPU-Z stats which is showing VRAM usage. No matter what VRAM is used along with system RAM as the images need to be in the framebuffer to be displayed. But how/why it's 1.7gb is a little odd. My calculations don't get anywhere near that high, but I don't know the size or bit depth of the images to get a valid figure.

Just for your information with the old Maxthon browsers I could open 200+ tabs till I had only >1GB RAM left from 8GB and still play PSO2 which uses ~1GB RAM and ~600MB VRAM and I had a HD7770 with 1 GB VRAM at that time and disabled page file.

I should probably go back and use Opera 11.62. Good old days when devs knew what they do and you could leave Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Maxton(all 4 at the same time) open with many tabs and still play games with 4GB RAM and 512MB VRAM. But I guess these days you need 32GB RAM and 8GB VRAM to do the same...

Go to opera and you will see that for 130 tabs open (isn't much) you will have same amount of RAM consumption ore even more

Only the dev's can say. But you should have something like 1 main process, 1 for each tab, 1 for extensions, 1 for plugins running (so # of tabs +3). At least I recall reading something like that at some stage a while back. So around 11 is about right, some could be dead ones that didn't close properly - or for something else that i'm not aware of. FYI i've got 15 processes with 12 tabs

But it's not something that you or anyone should be concerned with, unless you're having issues or they're causing issues on the system. Do you also peruse the windows processes constantly making sure that there isn't an extra process running? Seems a little OTT unless you're doing troubleshooting to fix a problem.

When you were doing that websites weren't as heavy or complex as they are now. Doing the same now i doubt you'd have as much luck.

I see in your picture for Opera RAM=40% .....40% from 8G mean about 3G of RAM

For people who can't read numbers on my pictures or imgur is blocked.

Maxthon 5.0.2.1000 ~134 tabs use 5200MB RAM and 1740MB VRAM
Opera 11.62             ~164 tabs use 3299MB RAM and 165MB VRAM
Maxthon 4.4.1.2000 ~221 tabs use 4343MB RAM and 124MB VRAM

Window uses 1575MB RAM and 80MB VRAM.

Quick math, maybe off by a few %.

So Opera uses 52% less RAM and 95% less VRAM then Maxton 5.
Maxthon 4.4.1. uses 23% less RAM and 97% less VRAM then Maxthon 5.

The question of the year is: Why?

 

And while were at it I would like to say that there's another problem with MX5, When I open multiple sites with scroll button the browser loads them, I move to one of those tabs and the browser reloads that site, now I move to another one and the browser reloads that too. FFS I opened that site less tham 2 minutes ago.

I would be really happy if the Maxthon guys could reduce VRAM usage by at least 60-70%, since I don't have money for NVIDIA Quadro P6000 24GB or AMD FirePro W9100 32GB to use this browser with this much increase in VRAM usage.

I run into this problem as well. Yes, it is due to many open tabs, heavy pages with lots of media content and a finite amount of ram.
It would be good if Mx had a limit to how much of the available memory it can use.

When Mx needs all available memory, the screen, mouse, keyboard freeze up and you just have to wait, hoping it unfreezes.
If it's possible to implement some kind of limit to memory usage, that would be an improvement, afaic. 

Also, the number of processes Mx opens, is relevant because each process requires a certain amount of memory, just to run.

...I'll bet there are entire philosophies about this subject, competing in the market place...

Others have mentioned the reloading of tabs and I have seen it myself, but not recently. If you haven't made a clean install recently, I would start there.

From what I see in Opera there are an option (like in Firefox)-"Delay Loading Background Tabs". On the session restoring, If you have enabled this option, only the last active tab before closing will be really loaded, for the rest of the tabs (background tabs) only the URL is preloaded, not the content. When you click on another tab then this tab is loaded and so on. So a lot of RAM is saved because you never  need instatnly for all restored tabs.That's maybe the explanation that Opera need initially less RAM than Maxthon wich have no such an option. I write here now and long time ago ..for introducing this option in Maxthon, but no one hears. While I understand Maxthon could be better at process and resource management, the main problem lies with Blink (the 'Ultra Mode' engine). Blink is maintained by the Chromium team, which forms the basis of Google Chrome. AFAIK their design decisions have been performance first/resource cost second while WebKit, the engine Blink forked from, is the other way around (that's partly why QtWebKit is making a comeback).

The VRAM usage you're seeing is the result of these design choices. If Maxthon tried to reduce usage they would have to reverse a lot of big things in the way Blink works which isn't trivial. Opera Software have been working on reducing Blink's resource usage but as Maxthon doesn't make use of the latest Blink code yet we can't see if it makes any difference in your scenario.

The only workaround for now would be to disable GPU acceleration but that defeats the object of having a GPU if it's not being used. It's not a good idea to use older versions seeing as they have security flaws like POODLE exposed in them that weren't fixed until much later on in 4.9.4.
