Trovi search

Is Trovi search a part of Maxthon? every time I download a new version of Maxthon I have an extra tab open that is Trovi. I assume it's a part of Maxthon or is it a browser hacker? I have run my anti virus and Malwarebytes but they don't find it so I don't know.

Where are you from? And where you downloaded your Maxthon installer?
Maxthon use Google CSE by default, but in some countries MX use other searches. For example, MX use Yandex in Russian.
So...

  • Open Menu → Settings → General, check your page on startup.
  • Open Menu → Extensions and try to remove or turn off Search add-on.
  • Open Menu → Settings → Search engine and add your favorite search.

  • 2 months later...

I've had this happen about twice over the past month or two. Although it's not a new page opening, just the URL to my default search engine is changed to add trovi.com which then redirects to the default search (bing.com). Restoring the default search fixes it. The fact that it has come back once makes me think it might be a website i might have visited.

Portable version (4.4.8.1000) downloaded from maxthon forum (as has been every release).
Userdata imported from previous version.
There are no search extensions, or other ones not installed explicitly by me.
All extensions are the same ones in use for a long time now.
Nothing found in malware/virus checks.
No other browsers show any trovi related activity, although they are rarely used and were probably not used when the infection was instigated.
No trovi related programs/files/data as described in removal guides.

Check your startup page settings. From my reading, trovi basically just changes your default search and start pages to trovi.com and possibly collects data. Removing the links fixes the issue, assuming there isn't more on the system that restores them once deleted. Checking for malware after removing the urls should ensure it doesn't return.

I believe this "search" extension was installed with Maxthon, which makes me very suspicious.

Be as suspicious as you want, without proof it's nothing more than hearsay. Based on my info above, i don't think it's related to anything Maxthon, more than likely a file/site visited.

The reason for my suspicion is quite simply that no website on Earth should be able to change my default search settings (or ANY browser settings) without my permission. Doubly so for Maxthon, because it's a less common browser and therefore a less likely target for vulnerabilities. Yet this Trovi redirect has shown up on ALL of my devices. Also, a review of Trovi.com shows no actual malicious intent - as far as search engine redirects and toolbars go, it's remarkably unobtrusive. Trovi.com also mentions having partnerships with browsers, software vendors, and websites. It would not be out of line to suspect Maxthon of partnering with a search redirector such as Trovi for statistics gathering.

But even if there is no complicity, my browser settings should NOT be vulnerable to the whim of whatever websites I visit. So I still pin the blame firmly on Maxthon.

Very true, but i'm very careful about what i install on my system, and even I have on occasion accidentally let some thirdparty program install with a program that I actually wanted to install.

All have maxthon installed? That would be quite questionable??

Very true. But with the issues caused when the search debacle happened recently, I would have hoped that Maxthon would have learned their lesson.
