Tooltip flickering on ChatGPT – Maxthon 7.5.2.9600 - Win 11

I’m experiencing a reproducible UI issue on ChatGPT when using Maxthon.

On chatgpt.com, when I move the mouse over the buttons around the message input area — for example the voice button, close button, and other nearby controls — the tooltip does not remain stable. It rapidly appears/disappears or “vibrates” continuously while the mouse stays over the same button.

The issue is reproduced on two completely different Windows PCs, both using Maxthon.

It does not happen in Google Chrome on the same computers, with the same ChatGPT account and the same page. In Chrome, the tooltips remain perfectly stable.

I tested the following:

Maxthon 7.5.2.5801
Maxthon 7.5.2.9600 portable
Two different Windows PCs
Hardware acceleration ON and OFF
ANGLE graphics backend:
Default
OpenGL
D3D11
D3D9
D3D11on12
Mouse Gestures disabled
Super Drag disabled
Chrome-like User-Agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/140.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
Clean portable Maxthon profile

None of these tests changed the behavior.

I also checked Maxthon flags for tooltip and hover. There is no relevant tooltip flag, and the only hover-related flag is “Tab Hover Card Images”, which is unrelated to webpage tooltips.

Steps to reproduce:

Open https://chatgpt.com
Open any conversation
Move the mouse over one of the buttons around the message input field
Keep the mouse stationary over the button
The tooltip rapidly flickers / disappears and reappears instead of staying visible

Expected behavior:
The tooltip should remain stable while the mouse stays over the button.

Actual behavior:
The tooltip continuously flickers.

Because this happens on two separate PCs, on both the normal and portable versions of Maxthon, and because Chrome works perfectly on the same PCs, this strongly looks like a compatibility issue between Maxthon and the current ChatGPT web interface, possibly related to hover/mouse events, tooltip rendering, or Maxthon’s Chromium integration.

I can also provide a short video showing the issue if needed.

This sounds like a fairly well-isolated browser compatibility issue. Since you reproduced it on two different PCs and with both the installed and portable versions of Maxthon, while Chrome works normally on the same machines, hardware acceleration or a specific Windows installation seems less likely.
The fact that it specifically affects hover tooltips also makes mouse-event handling or the way Maxthon renders/recalculates the tooltip particularly interesting. A short screen recording would probably be useful for the developers.

If possible, I’d also test the same ChatGPT page in another Chromium-based browser using the same Chromium version as closely as possible. That could help determine whether this is specific to Maxthon’s integration or a broader Chromium compatibility issue.

Good troubleshooting so far—especially testing a clean portable profile and multiple graphics backends.

Same problem here for the past two days. The tooltip keeps flickering continuously. “Ctrl+Shift+D” flickers over the microphone icon, which means I can no longer click the microphone. It always worked perfectly before (only in desktop APP working with Chrome).

Thank you both very much for your replies and for taking the time to look into this issue.

I’m attaching a short video showing the problem. The flickering also interferes with clicking the buttons: quite often, the first click is not registered, and I have to click two or three times before the button finally responds.
