Possible Windows Registry Corruption Causing Maxthon5 Problems

Hi,

For a while now I have been having trouble with Maxthon5 locking up, crashing and generally miss-behaving. After several un-installs and re-installs without any success in solving the problem I decided to investigate the Windows10 registry.

I have found what may be corrupted registry keys and I am now trying to find out if they are Maxthon5 registry entries and may be causing my problem and whether it is safe to delete them. The possible corruption occurs in the data field of the following registry keys:

1. Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1526592434-1343016071-92557109-1001_Classes\.mxcc

     [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1526592434-1343016071-92557109-1001_Classes\.mxcc]
     @="C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711ºÈ¾½¼»¼ÎÏÉÏξ¼º¼»Ç¾ÇÍ̾ÊǾ¹ÎºÇÎÉÍÈÈËÏÏÏÏ"

2. Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1526592434-1343016071-92557109-1001\Software\Classes\.mxcc

     [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1526592434-1343016071-92557109-1001\Software\Classes\.mxcc]
     @="C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711ºÈ¾½¼»¼ÎÏÉÏξ¼º¼»Ç¾ÇÍ̾ÊǾ¹ÎºÇÎÉÍÈÈËÏÏÏÏ"

At first glance these keys seem to be identical; but there is a subtle difference in that whilst their data component is identical, their locations are different.

The two keys seem to possibly have the same corruption which is the last part of the data string after "C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711", ie. “ºÈ¾½¼»¼ÎÏÉÏξ¼º¼»Ç¾ÇÍ̾ÊǾ¹ÎºÇÎÉÍÈÈËÏÏÏÏ”

If I take the first part of the keys (that is "C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711") and search the registry it returns the following registry key:

   Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\{C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711}

     [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\{C31E9BE77BFA9BC414A12F0017818711}]
     @="Yb0-+Z+hicih0+Y+Za0agf0da0XhYahcgbbeiiii"

If anyone is able to confirm;
  a.  that these are Maxthon5 registry keys
  b.  that the data is corrupt
  c.  that it is safe to delete them
then I would be most grateful.

Regards,

Hi there, please press the keyboard "Win+R", run "%temp%", to find the folder "MaxthonCrashData", then compress the folder and send it to me.

Hi BugSir600,

I edited what I believed to be the two corrupted Registry Keys by truncating the data fields to the first 16 characters and re-started the computer without any problems.

I then re-installed Maxthon v5.2.7.5000 and again re-started the computer.

Maxthon has now been running without the crashes or lock-ups for over a day and I am hoping that my problems have been solved. If the program starts to lock-up and/or crash then I shall post the crash report for you.

Regards,

CRB

Hi BugSir006,

Maxthon locked up on 11 Sept 2019 around 23:10 British Summer Time.

The program froze and became unresponsive whilst browsing. I eventually got the "Not Responding" message. I selected "Close the Program" and Maxthon appeared to shut down. Checking the Task Manager showed a still running Maxthon entry. I re-started Maxthon and then immediately shut it down and the Task Manager entries all closed.

Crash Data file is attached.

Hi CRB,

The file is empty, too. It doesn't have the file "crash.dmp". :(

Have you installed any extensions? I recommend you to disable the extensions and install the latest beta v5.3.8.1500.

Hi BugSir006,

(Writing this via Microsoft Edge.)

Thanks for your patience.

Maxthon has just frozen whilst loading a web page. I have searched the path that you gave "C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp\MaxthonCrashData\" but there is no "crash.dmp" file. In that location there is a directory named "1565514034" which is empty, and a file named "CRASH_INFO" which is timestamped 12/09/2019 11:59 and is 2kb in size. It appears that a crash dump is not being created.

I have only AdBlock and RoboForm installed, I shall remove the RoboForm and try again.

How do I get the beta v5.3.8.1500 file?

Regards,

CRB

Hi BugSir006,

I installed the mx5.308.1500-beta on the 18th September 2019 and the installation went OK. Unfortunately since then I have had a few crashes and now I hope that I will be able to send you some crash dumps in the file MaxthonCrashData.zip
